The most apparent use of the concept of space in this design is the silhouette of the runner in the foreground. By placing it lower in the design and making it larger than the other subjects it appears to be closer. It is interesting that negative space was used as the main subject (the runner), while the background (that which is normally negative space) is shown in greater detail.
