    Question 2 -
How is line used in the composition? Contour, types of line, emotion or texture effectively used (describe where and how within the composition).
How were elements of line used to optimum effect in composition? If line was not effective give reasons.

I think that line is a dominate element in this composition. Contour lines were used extensively (almost exclusively) to illustrate the subjects. By providing different colors of contour lines, Rufus was able to create depth and detail. The lines used to define the track, as well as the lanes within the track, are unmistakable. These, combined with the sharp lines of the hurdle and perimeter fence, give the feeling of strict competition and training. The runners and hurdlers direction of movement create implied lines that, by being so distinctively in line with the track and seemingly directly perpendicular to the finish line enhance these feelings. The use of line in this composition is what makes it unique and interesting.

Question 4 – Personal Perspective – Concept- Rufus
How effectively was the concept of “transportation” explored? Do you think that this student successfully communicated transportation as the main idea of the composition; if not what do you think the main concept is?

I believe that the concept of this piece is the way running transports us. Now this can be taken on the physical level of getting from one place to another, as in one foot in front of the other. Another way that this can transport you is through spirituality; many runners are serious runners because when they are running they are given a sense of clarity in their life. So I believe that if you are looking at this from either level that it effectively gives of a concept of being transported. Great Job!

    Question 5 – Personal Perspective – Quality
What do you think of the quality of the design and composition? Do you believe the composition was well thought out, reasons? Were the elements of space, line and shape effectively used (yes and no not acceptable answers)?

    Hi Rufus,

I see that you chose running to portray transportation and everything seems to be well thought out. The overall quality of the design and composition is good and you seem to use the elements of space, line and shape effectively. The use of positive and negative space is well balanced; the image seems to be in proportion. The positioning of the people and objects create the illusion of depth; the runners in the front are larger and seem closer to the viewer while the images in the back appear smaller and further away. In my opinion, I think you added just the right amount of shapes/objects in your image; nothing is cluttered or lacking. Great use of space.

You also use lines in a great manner, too. We are all able to see what direction the runners are running towards. The lines on the track way not only depicts the different lanes but also guides the viewer toward the finish line. You effectively show imaginary lines as well. (For example, the runner and the pot of flowers with the checkered flags).

You use simple shapes to portray the majority of your objects/persons. The runner that is sort of blurred definitely gives off the feeling of adrenaline, heat from running and of course, motion. I am able to differentiate between most of the objects but I’m not quite certain what the reddish, yellow-orange square is.

Although it’s great that you included text in your image, I think you could have done without it or added something else to fill the corner. You could also have used another color to make it stand out more; to be honest, I didn’t even notice it until I looked at the lines. Other than that, you did a really good job, both in concept and design; you get the point across and portray the topic effectively. Great job on your first project!
